Love a cold coffee drink on warm mornings? Skip the coffee shop and try this high protein iced sweetpotato latte at home! Sweetpotato, cinnamon, and maple syrup offer delicious flavors in this energizing drink. This recipe provides 22 grams of protein to fuel your fitness and is very easy to make. Great at breakfast or for a mid-morning pick-me-up!

Disclosure: This recipe was developed in a paid partnership with the North Carolina Sweetpotato Commission Inc.

    Ingredients, Substitutions, and Instructions

Here’s everything you’ll need to make this recipe, along with some selected ingredient notes and substitution suggestions:

Milk, sweetpotato, maple syrup, coffee, vanilla, cinnamon, and vanilla protein powder.
    • Sweetpotato: This offers a naturally sweet and earthy flavor, and provides some key nutrients (like Vitamin A!). You can use mashed boiled sweetpotatoes, or the flesh of a baked sweetpotato, or you can microwave a sweetpotato and scoop out the tender flesh. (It’s a great way to use up leftovers of these!). Because this recipe is blended, it doesn’t have to be a perfectly smooth puree going in as it’ll get evenly distributed in the blender.
    • Protein powder: I recommend vanilla whey protein powder because it has a high bioavailability, meaning it’s used very efficiently by the body. If you want to make a plant-based version of this drink, though, just choose a good plant protein blend to use instead.
    • Strong coffee or espresso: Traditionally, lattes are made with espresso. Since I don’t usually have that on hand at home, I use cold brew coffee instead. You can also use strong coffee that you previously brewed and chilled. This recipe is flexible!
    • Milk: A classic latte is usually made with 3 parts milk, 1 part espresso/coffee. This recipe is modified slightly, using 2 parts milk, 1 part protein powder, and 1 part strong coffee. This provides a lovely creamy base for the drink. If you’re making a plant-based version, soy milk is a great substitute because it has a similar protein content as dairy milk.

Once you’ve got all your ingredients on hand, just add everything to a blender cup.

All of the ingredients added to a blender cup.

Blend for about 30 seconds until the mixture is smooth and creamy, then pour over ice and enjoy!

    Nutrition Highlights

As a dietitian, here are some of my favorite things about this latte:

    • 22 grams of protein to help with muscle repair and recovery from workouts
    • About 70% of your daily Vitamin A needs (thanks to that sweetpotato!), which is important for eye health and immune health
    • Only 7 grams added sugar (and if you want no added sugar, you can easily leave out the maple syrup)
    • 35% of your daily calcium needs and 13% of your Vitamin D needs, both key for bone health in active women
    • Excellent source of Vitamin B12, which is important for energy production in the body
