A burger with mango hummus?!
I know it sounds a little strange, but hear me out. Hummus works well in a burger recipe, because it helps bind everything together, as well as lock in moisture. It’s not overpowering at all; instead it compliments the beef quite nicely.
In this recipe in particular, the Lantana Mango Hummus offers a hint of sweetness that pairs well with the spicy and salty seasonings. The product is made out of white beans and mango puree, mixed with a little sugar, tahini, lime, and oil (and a few other ingredients).
While most people would veer towards a sweet recipe with this hummus – you can totally think outside the box like this with savory recipes too!
Is this Cajun mango avocado burger healthy?
It’s not a light salad or anything. ? But this burger IS relatively balanced, with a nice breakdown of carbs, protein, and fat, and will totally satisfy that training “hanger” I know a lot of you deal with!
You guys know what I mean. You get in from that long run or ride, have your recovery meal, rest for a bit – but then hours later that day, your belly’s telling you “IT’S GO TIME – FEED ME!”. (No? Just me?)
This mango burger is perfect for those meal times. Combine this with a big helping of steamed veggies, and your full meal will clock in right around 600 calories with more than 30 grams of muscle-building protein. (See below for modifications to reduce the calories if you need to!)
Dietary modifications for mango avocado burgers:
This recipe is quite easy to adapt for some of the major diets out there. Lantana Mango Hummus is vegan, gluten free, non-GMO, and kosher – so it can be a staple in your recipe across most dietary restrictions!
Here are a few suggested dietary modifications for the rest of the recipe if you follow any of these diets:
- Dairy free diet – just skip the cheese
- Gluten free diet – use a gluten free bun or lettuce wrap rather than a whole wheat bun
- Lower calorie or lower carb diet – use lean ground beef, skip the cheese, and use a lettuce wrap instead of a bun
Help – my burger is crumbling!
Every so often I run into this issue when I’m prepping burger recipes (not necessarily this one, but any burger recipe!), so I wanted to share some of my favorite tips:
- Chop your onion very, very fine. Large chunks will prevent the patty from sticking together when it starts to cook and release some of the grease. The smaller, the better.
- Don’t “overhandle” the ingredients for your patty. Mix everything together by hand quickly, form your patties, and let that be it. Overworking it can make the patties more likely to crumble and can also make them tougher than you’d like.
- Keep everything cold! If you’ve had ingredients out for a while, consider popping the patties in the freezer for a few minutes while you get your skillet out and ready. This will help them stay together.
Luckily the hummus helps bind everything together in this recipe, and the slice of cheese placed on top at the end also helps.
Alright, you’ve got the deets on the nutrition and tips for cooking this mango avocado burger – now go grab your ingredients and whip it up for dinner! If you do try this recipe, please do leave a rating and comment to let me know how you liked it.
Cajun Mango Avocado Burgers
Ingredients
Beef Patties:
- 1 lb ground beef (85/15 or 80/20)
- 2 tsp Cajun seasoning
- 1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
- 1/3 cup Lantana Mango Hummus
- 1/4 tsp salt (optional)
- 1/4 tsp pepper
For assembling burgers:
- 5 slices Havarti cheese (or pepper jack, or your favorite – all optional)
- 5 whole wheat buns
- 1/2 mango, sliced
- 1 avocado, sliced
- 2.5 tbsp Lantana Mango Hummus
Instructions
- Combine the ground beef with the Cajun seasoning, finely chopped red onion, Lantana Mango Hummus, salt (optional), and pepper. Form into 5 patties.
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for about four minutes. Carefully flip over using a spatula, and cook an additional 3-5 minutes, or until the burger reaches 165 degrees. Add a slice of cheese to each and turn off the heat.
- Place burgers on the bottom bun, and top with sliced mango and avocado. Spread about half a tablespoon of Lantana Mango Hummus on the top bun, then place on the burger. Enjoy!
Notes
- Chop your onion very, very fine. Large chunks will cause the burger to be crumbly.
- I recommend cooking these burgers on the stovetop rather than the grill – they hold together better this way.
