Both my hubby’s birthday and my birthday are rapidly approaching, which means I’ve of course got gifts on the mind. Brainstorming what to purchase or make for him is consistently a challenge. He’s a tech person, so all electronics are out since I don’t know nearly as much about them. I’ve done a lot of the sentimental stuff already – the coupon books, pre-planned date nights, etc. And when I ask about gifts, he always (graciously) says he doesn’t need anything.
Coming up with ways to treat myself for my own birthday – well that’s a heck of a lot easier 😉 My parents often still send me to a little birthday money each year, which means I get a guilt-free excuse to buy a small gift for myself. I’m normally thrifty and try not to buy outside our budget, so my birthday is a time when I can let loose (a little).
This year, I’ve been checking out some new cycling products as part of my pre-birthday browsing for both myself and my hubby. Since we’re both getting ready for Farm to Fork Fondo next month, it’s only appropriate, right?! I thought I’d share a few fun inexpensive picks here on the blog…
5 Awesome Cycling Products! {Great for Gift Ideas}

1. Body Glide Cycle
I’ve been a big fan of Body Glide for preventing run-related chafing, so it’s only natural that I wanted to try out their new cycling product too. This stuff is great for preventing chafing from irritating seams on your ride clothing and protecting you from those dreaded saddle sores.
Note: if you’ve got the regular stuff you can probably get away with using it for cycling too, but the cycling one does have a slightly different formulation of ingredients (mainly a great proportion of allantoin, a skin protectant).
2. Donut Bike Bell
OK, this isn’t a super new product but still – a sweet donut bell on your bike?! YES PLEASE. Whether you’re a serious cyclist, a weekend warrior, or you just like taking the cruiser for a spin around the neighborhood – this is a fun and inexpensive toy that all of us can love.
3. Velopedia: The Infographic Book of Cycling
This book is an ideal gift idea for a cycling lover – especially if you don’t know their preferences for ride gear or don’t want to guess on sizing for ride clothing. Instead, treat ‘em to this and know you’ll have a winner.
The book details everything you’ve ever wanted to know about road cycling in colorful, informative infographics. Think anything from cycling history, to iconic moments, to your favorite pro records – and more. The official release date for the book is June 6th, but you can pre-order on Amazon if you’d like!
4. Brilliant Reflective (Safety Strips)
You guys – I’m obsessed with these. These are reflective safety strips that are useful for any outdoor activity that might be done in low light conditions, cycling (and running) included. The brand has two versions of safety strips: a stick-on one that you can adhere and remove, or an iron-on version that will permanently adhere to your items.
5. De Soto Coolwings
This recommendation came from quite a few of my tri buddies, and now this is on my must-have list. These cover the arms, shoulders, and upper back – and when they get wet, they provide a unique cooling sensation to help you feel more comfortable during those warm weather rides.
In addition, the wings help protect the skin from the damaging rays of the sun, blocking 90% of UVB rays.
